<h2>Wins A 4th Term</h2>MALDEN – With over 200 supporters reveling in a historic campaign victory Tuesday night, here is how Malden Mayor Gary Christenson described how he would celebrate the big win the following day.&nbsp; “I will have you know I have meetings on various city matters at 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 o’clock and 7 o’clock tomorrow evening,” the mayor told them as they listened with rapt attention.

Career Services for Young PeopleMore than 40 Malden youth are gainfully employed at a multitude of worksites throughout the city. This is on top of the 300 students who are currently working through the summer. Students have been introduced to career-based programming such as healthcare, web design, and data analysis enabling them to experience different skillsets while earning money.Support for Adults seeking EmploymentMayor Christenson appointed a Career Services Coordinator to help adults who need support finding employment. This includes the Career Connections Initiative which connects businesses, programs, and organizations with Malden residents.

Malden residents deserve to have access to gainful employment, and Mayor Christenson has pursued programming to support adult and student jobseekers.

Career Services

Greening the Gateway Cities ProgramMayor Christenson, in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Recreation's Urban and Community Forestry Program is working to increase the number of trees planted in Malden, which will reduce household heating and cooling by improving the tree canopy in urban and residential areas. The goal is to plant 2,400 trees over a three-year period. The Climate Action Plan will drive the City’s response to climate change and improve sustainability by identifying important steps the City should take to address climate concerns.Lead Pipe ReplacementMayor Christenson is aggressively working to remove all lead lines in the community. When the Mayor began the removal project, there were over 6,000 lead pipes in the city's infrastucture. That number today is less than 3,000. On average, Malden is replacing over 200 lead lines per year, with the goal to eradicate all lead lines by 2028.Malden is also one of ten cities nationwide recognized with a Government Experience Award by the Center for Digital Government for its initiative for prioritizing lead service line replacement by childhood exposure.Malden River WorksMalden received a $200,550 municipal climate resilience grant, awarded by the Governor’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program, to continue design work on the Malden River Works project. The City previously won two MVP Action Grants in 2020 and 2021 for a total of $504,614 to bring the project up to 75% design. The new MVP Action Grant will be used to continue design work and permitting over the next year, with construction documents ready to go out to bid by the fall of 2023. Malden River Works was identified in the City’s MVP Plan as one of the top priority actions in climate change adaptation. The project seeks to transform the Malden Department of Public Works (DPW) yard, located on Commercial Street along the Malden River, in order to incorporate climate resiliency measures into the DPW yard and create a new waterfront park for the Malden community. The DPW plays a crucial role in disaster response, managing street repairs, waste removal, and drainage repairs in the wake of climate events.CyclingThe Christenson administration worked with bikeshare company Bluebikes to install three locations in the downtown area. Mayor Christenson directed federal ARPA funds to offer a limited number of free one-month memberships to Malden residents. To further support biking in Malden’s downtown, he added 39 new bike racks.Mass SaveMalden now participates in Mass Save, a public program that provides residents and businesses with the opportunity to get a no-cost home energy assessment to help them find ways to save energy and money. Mass Save offers significant rebates on energy-saving improvements like weatherization, energy efficient appliances as well as heating and cooling systems. They can also provide some energy and water-saving devices for free. Residents can sign up for the assessment by calling the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="">Malden Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development</a>.

Mayor Christenson and his team are revolutionizing our response to the climate crisis by planting thousands of trees, building a new riverfront park, increasing renewable energy, eliminating lead pipes, and investing in our first Climate Action Plan.

Combating Climate Change

Mayor Gary Christenson arrived at the Malden City Clerk's office bright and early May 9th to request nomination papers for the upcoming November municipal elections, where Mayor Christenson will be running for another term. Mayor Christenson is proud of the transformative results for Malden achieved over the last term. Greater Boston Labor Council endorses Mayor Gary Christenson for re-election

The former city hall/police station site at 200 Pleasant Street had long been perceived as having a negative impact because it made Pleasant Street a dead-end and the downtown virtually invisible from the Malden Center MBTA station. In 2014, the City sold its City Hall Building and adjacent Police Station located at 200 Pleasant to a private developer who demolished and redeveloped it into a transit-oriented site with mixed-use development. Through the efforts of Mayor Gary Christenson, his extraordinary team and the City Council, the site of the former 200 Pleasant Street building is now a thriving hub that also includes a brand new, beautifully designed City Hall building.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/767865ab-dd37-40ee-849d-0760b0de8936/e91527c9-ad69-4474-9815-8a89b145d5ed/10cb30fa-ed49-4151-b555-fb76a712307e.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=161%2C0%2C3798%2C2294&amp;w=1500" alt="Carline Louis, a Black woman in striped pants and a blouse sitting with Mayor Christenson on a bench in Malden Center." title="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">History was also made with the 2020 re-opening of Pleasant Street to through traffic after being made a dead-end in the 1970s with the construction of the Malden Government Center Building. The herculean project included many working parts such as constructing a new police station, finding suitable space for city employees, then moving them into temporary buildings along with the demolition of buildings and several years of construction.The City Council voted unanimously to authorize $12.5 million in bonding for the acquisition of land and construction of a new police station and to purchase a condominium shell consisting of approximately 42,000 sq. ft. in the new mixed-use development. The designated developer of the two-acre parcel, Jefferson Apartment Group (JAG), invested $100 million in the project. 234 housing units, 25,000 square feet of retail space, and 276 parking spaces on the site were constructed.Mayor Christenson also led efforts with the planning board to rezone the downtown which created the opportunity for three new life science and lab spaces to be opened in a building that was previously vacant. The combined size of the three spaces are over 100,000 square feet.

Malden’s historic Downtown reconfiguration and redevelopment have completely reshaped the way residents, visitors, and businesses experience the city.

Creation of Office of Housing StabilityThis city department, which opened in 2022, helps Malden residents find and keep their housing by offering a range of services to renters, homeowners, and landlords. The Office of Housing Stability provides services including rental assistance, mortgage assistance, eviction and foreclosure prevention, legal assistance, landlord-tenant mediation, housing search, case management, and more.Converting vacant homes into affordable housingThis effort is the next phase of a year-long study of Malden’s vacant properties, funded through MassHousing’s Neighborhood Hub program. Through this program, the City intends to acquire vacant homes, rehabilitate them, and sell them at an affordable price to low-income households. The City’s Inspectional Services Department (ISD) and Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) are spearheading the effort.Affordable Unit CreationThe former Salvation Army building was acquired by the Asian Community Development Corp. (ACDC) and together with the Mayor will work with OSPCD to develop over 20 units, all of which will be affordable housing. Additionally, Mayor Christenson proposed funding for Bread of Life, a local non-profit, to add 14 affordable studio apartments to provide permanent housing for very low-income formerly homeless individuals.To continue to address the need for affordable housing, future projects are also in various stages of planning which will bring townhouses for purchase.Eviction Moratorium During COVIDMalden was one of the last cities to lift the eviction moratorium in response to COVID. In December of 2021, the Mayor signed an executive order preventing evictions from being enforced in most cases and made $250,000 available in rental assistance through a partnership with the local nonprofit Housing Families, Inc. Both actions were taken in order to keep Malden residents safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The executive order prevented evictions from being enforced in order to promote public health and&nbsp;applied to evictions due to nonpayment of rent and to no-cause evictions.

Mayor Christenson has launched and expanded multiple programs to protect families and provide options and support for housing affordability.

As the son of a Vietnam Veteran, Mayor Christenson learned early about the importance of supporting our veterans. It's not just on Memorial Day that we pay homage to our community's warriors. Out of respect for all who have served, it's what we do as a City throughout the year that defines our community's commitment to veterans.Mayor Christenson worked with the Veterans Services Director and Malden veterans to unveil and dedicate two bronze statues this year that honor the men and women who served during several recent operations, including Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. The statues were placed next to bronze statues that were previously dedicated in honor of Malden’s Vietnam and Korean veterans.

Malden Police Body-Worn Camera ProgramMalden Police Officers are now wearing and utilizing body-worn cameras.&nbsp; The cameras record interactions between police officers and residents during dispatched calls for service as well as during officer-initiated events such as traffic stops, field encounters, and during the service of court orders. Footage recorded by officers will be retained in a cloud-based storage system on a specified retention schedule. All requests for copies of body-worn camera footage will be subject to the Massachusetts Public Records Law.New Fire StationMayor Christenson is focused on ensuring fire satefy and appropriate emergency response times in Malden. With the collaborative work of the Malden Police, Fire, elected local officials, and non-profit leaders, the Task Force has been able to enact programs, supports, and policies that have helped to significantly decrease the number of overdoses in Malden two years in a row. From 2020 to 2021, overdoses decreased by 35%; and from 2021 to 2022, overdoses were down another 20% in the first six months of 2023.

Public Safety

"Mayor Gary Christenson and Ward 6 Councillor Steve Winslow celebrated the start of construction at Trafton Park on Monday. The construction project is Phase II of the Trafton Park Master Plan, which was developed and revised over a series of six community meetings. The improvements include upgrades to the existing dog park, ballfield, backstop, fencing and two tennis courts, one of which will become a three-quarters basketball court and paved play space."

Redevelopment of former Malden Hospital SiteWith persistence and determination, Mayor Christenson worked on different proposals to develop the former site of the Malden Hospital, which had been vacant for decades.Mayor Christenson's office led the most recent effort to facilitate Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare, who formed a joint venture, to build a 144-bed inpatient behavioral health facility, which will include 6.7 acres of public open space. Malden Center for Arts &amp; CultureThe City of Malden acquired the former Malden Courthouse and is renovating the space to create a brand new Malden Center for Arts &amp; Culture, which will be a multicultural, multimedia, visual and performing arts center with both local and regional programming that will serve Malden artists and the community at large. The Comprensive Language Access Project assessed the City’s approach to language access in many key areas. Mayor Christenson directed $350,000 of ARPA funds to execute the plan over a two-year period, after which the City can evaluate the metrics and adjust the plan based upon real measurable experiences. Language Access Coordinator, Elena Martinez will drive its execution, assist City Departments, and measure the success of the approach for future adjustments.

Mayor Christenson’s committment to a welcoming city for all residents has driven him to create multilingual city resources so nobody is left out.
